oh hai! [15 Jul 2009|02:17pm]

BRUCE SPRINGSTZINE 1: WEEKEND IN THE VOID takes place in Toronto, on Canzine weekend last October. I flew in from Vancouver, and had exactly 36 hours from touchdown to takeoff again. What follows is a detailed report on that day and a half of sleep deprivation, self-abuse and small pressery. Sometimes vague and deranged, sometimes lucidly hung over, this is an honest report, complete with hand written field notes, of what happens when a writer (Joey Comeau) and a publisher (myself) attempt to stay up for 36 hours, fueled mainly on energy drinks, little orange pills, and pharmaceutical grade tequila.

Yo, chaps. I have lost the password to my LJ. I am posting this through Semagic, which still has it, but won't give it up. Basically I cannot check my friends page and see hidden entries, SO, I need a new LJ. After looking through the last year or so of entries to come up with something relevant, I've decided upon cuttheeffects. It comes from my 26th birthday post: "OK, so I ate too many pills and started wigging, so I decided to "cut the effects" with booze." If this is not what my life has come to (really, most of ours), this cutting of effects (of overdoses, of bad relationships or decisions, of life in general), then I'm not sure if I'm interpreting right. Anyway.

We are entering the arena of the unwell.

PS: I picked this name when I was drunk.

A year ago I was putting together the first Loose Teeth book, editing it, copy editing, designing the cover, typesetting the insides, etc. and now we're putting together a new book, it's being edited in toronto, designed in victoria, and here I am in Vancouver reading books called Start Small, Finish Big- Fifteen Key Lessons to Start and Run Your Own Business.

I also bought Rich by Thirty - A young adult's guide to financial success.

This month in magazines:
Men's Vogue
Quill and Quire
the new Geist just showed up today.

No novels all month make me go crazy.

Best things about drinking at the Legion last night:

"We should have a rock 'n' roll summer where we dress up and have an official shirt desleeving"
"Dude is singing Mr Roboto. By Stixx." ..... "Sorry I said by Stixx, i know you know."

So I got a raise at work today, and along with that I now make the schedule (mine and everyone elses) and I can hire and fire people, officially. As well I can make more senior type decisions rather than just do what I'm told, so in the morning I'm sending all our Uggs to Calgary! Fuck you, Uggs!

I'm renting an office downtown sometime in February for Forget/Teeth, and I'm going to move all the books in there so that there's lots of room for Tanis' stuff in March. My goal is to go down to four days a week at work so I can spend one doing "literary" things like getting caught up on email, licking stamps, and getting drunk in the office. Also I'll be on the look out for an air-hockey table, so: Visitors Welcome!

I printed out all the Teeth sales for 2006 in 10 point font and it's 26 pages long. Now I have to math that out to each book and pay up! Authors get samwiches!

So I'm probaby going down to San Francisco in late April for the Alternative Press Expo. Now to decide whether to make it part of a week long getaway with the lady or a month-long book tour with a serious sketch-case like Joey Comeau. I've been drawing up diagrams of possible routes, they kind of look like electrician's plans.

That's me in Toronto the last time we were on tour. This is either the day after we walked around eating Percocet all night or when I was having an anxiety attack from too many ephedrine and Rockstars, after driving most of the way from New York City to Toronto.

If we do tour this Spring, we'll be going straight across Canada, because you know, that's what CanLit dudes do, and probably attacking both coasts and Texas. We'll also have a new book for Joey to read from, but that's still all hush hush.

Viva los Amtrak!

Took the day off work so I could handle some Loose Teeth shit. Celebrated having a Tuesday off by drinking a lot of beer with Dusty at the Cambie, then cabbing home and calling people into the wee hours. Woke up this morning at 7:30 because my alarm wasn't switched off, and couldn't really get back to sleep despite being majory drunk/hung over.

At ten I got up and answered my front door and it was 1,200 books. A) that's more books than I thought it was going to be and B) there were fewer per box, which means there were way more boxes than I had anticipated. I lugged them all in and then made some hangover breakfast (hashbrowns, eggs, brie. cut up mixed up and fried up). After that I felt pretty dece so I got down to doing some real work (as opposed to the shit I do for paychecks). I stuffed about 150 envelopes, labeled them and got them ready to go, but I have to check my postage meter tomorrow before I can mail things.

I also did some work on the new Forget (http://www.forgetmagazine.com), which is a magazine I co-founded in 2001 and I am officially taking over as Editor of on Valentine's Day, which is our 6th birthday. I was reworking the archive today, and shit, even I'm a little impressed, and I don't usually give a shit about nothin', right? We've had all sorts of people I'm stoked on write for us. Lee Henderson, Stephen Osborne, fucking Yann Martel. Anyway, on Valentine's Day that shit is going off.

I also got a sneak preview at the cover of our newest book. Not the one that came today, but one that will be coming in Feb sometime. It looks rad and I'm so stoked to get to pay my friends to make art for me.

What else? Oh shit. I'm totally going to rent an office, this place is getting so small because of all the books. I'm going to get some place downtown where I can store shit and work, and there's going to be good whiskey and nice chairs, and people can swing by, you know? My first choice of locales is the Pacific Central Station, upstairs. They've gotta be renting shit out up there. It's so huge.

Anyway. If I had a digital camera I'd show you the new book, or maybe the evil wall of books, but that shit is on loan.

Blah blah blah I need to go to bed. Bookbrain.

Ah, Jake. You missed it. You missed huddling beneath a hedge, hiding from your friends. With nothing more than a bottle of mouthwash and a depraved mind.

OK, so I ate too many pills and started wigging, so I decided to "cut the effects" with booze. At around four I went to pick Tanis up in the Pacific Center and I had some sort of attack and barely made it outside before I passed out on the sidewalk. Eventually I managed to get up and drink half a milk shake, and get home on the bus where I laid in bed, naked, until 3 or so when I could finally get to sleep. It's one now and I managed to eat a donut from across the street and I think I'm ok.

1. We don't get enough use out of the kitchen. It's big and it's got better light than the bedroom and the table and chairs are new and they're right up beside the radiator.

    Tea kettle,
    4 bagels from Solly's on 28th,
1 Empty can of coconut milk.

    30 sewing needles,
The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst.

1 green road bike, unused since September.

2. The summer is over and the rain is here and we're standing on a stack of Kurt Vonnegut paperbacks to stay out of the path of the sharks and whiskey bottles swimming around the place. We plowed through them so fast and built stack so high we can see our Internet Service Provider from here. All the way to Halifax, NS where they're taking their sweet ass time making it so that we can receive email again.

I'd rather not reap anything we've sewn, thanks. [18 Sep 2006|06:08pm]
Ok, let's see. It's been 3 weeks since I updated. In that time I:

- Got Pneumonia even though it was the middle of August.
- Menaced many things with an axe. My Axe.
- Moved out of my sketchbag apartment, formerly known as the Fauxbo Mansion, now known apparently as the Dirty Dirty House.
- Found a new apartment way closer to all my friend's houses, way nicer, way brighter, and way more expensive. This apartment has not yet been named. I'm feeling _________ Manor.
- Got a haircut
- Got a job working stock in a shoe store called Gravity Pope. I want one of everything in there. My job is basically like playing Tetris, or, more accurately, I am the disk defragmentor of the store.
- Lost my wallet with all my ID and both my personal and business Visas and debit cards.
- Bought a baseball cap with SF stitched on the front of it. San Francisco is ok but the old schoolers remember the original SF(.com).

In case you didn't know it is now fall. Please start dressing in purple and orange and brown. Grey is OK too but it isn't as good for tree camo.

Let's go to the second run movie places a lot and see all the crappy exploding blockbusters we missed because there were parties to go to instead.

Bitsy is gone and so is Anne. We got Jordan back but we have to trade Zoe. Why couldn't we have shipped off one of the innumberable Lindsays or a spare Mercer?

Just kidding assholes.
